Social Media Essay: Connection or Isolation?

At first sight, it seems like writing a social media essay is the easiest assignment a student can get, since most students use up to five different social media services on a daily basis. It’s important to remember that the topic of an essay is important, but it doesn’t define the whole writing process. What defines it is a set of strict rules which imply that any paper should have a thesis statement and a set of arguments to prove the author’s opinion.

Though Social Media Is Designed to Connect People, it Actually Causes Many to Become More Isolated

There’s an opinion that social media makes people more isolated. Is it really like this? There are several arguments for and against it.

Social Media Makes People More Isolated

According to Frank Furedi, “through pursuing the project of self-socialization, young people attempt to personalize their media to ensure that it directly relates to their interests. This project tends to be pursued in isolation from other family members” (Furedi). Social media makes people more isolated because it changes traditions. For example, in the past families used to watch TV together. Nowadays parents can watch TV while their children this time can communicate with some people using social networks. So, families spend less time together than in the previous years.

Social Media Makes People Closer

Nevertheless, social media can make people closer. For instance, Ifeoma Vivian Dunu and Chinwe Elizabeth Uzochukwu suppose that “the development of the Internet has provided an alternative means for mobilizing the public” (Dunu, Uzochukwu). Just one of the examples of it. There is a movement called “Uridu.” Its purpose is to empower illiterate rural women all over the world providing them vital information that can help to improve the conditions of their lives. “Uridu” spreads information with a help of “Facebook,” “Twitter,” “Instagram” so that people can know about possibilities to make this world a little bit better. They look for people desiring to translate texts from one language to another and then this information becomes available to rural women. It’s possible because of special mp3-players. So, in this case social networks help to change the world.

So, we can say that social media has its advantages and disadvantages. It can make people more isolated but at the same time it can mobilize them to make some positive actions.
